16-09-2021 - New BMEL Call to Spark Innovation in Sheep and Goat Farming in Germany

National funding call supports projects that improve the keeping, feeding and breeding of sheep and goats as well as contribute to the sustainable development of this type of farming.

As part of its programme for 'Organic farming and other sustainable forms of agriculture' (BÖLN), Bundesministerium für Ernährung und Landwirtschaft (BMEL - German Federal Ministry for Food and Agriculture) has now launched a new call for research and development projects. The programme is designed to support innovative projects that help to preserver and improve sheep and goat farming in Germany. Projects may address the entire production and value chain of sheep and goat farming and develop concepts and products to improve the keeping, feeding or breeding of animals, as well as support animal health and welfare, reduce the use of medication and antibiotics and address overarching goals of climate, environmental and resource protection. This may include the production, processing and marketing of milk and dairy products, as well as meat products and wool. The programme also supports the analysis of agricultural contributions from sheep and goat breeding and husbandry, including preservation and sustainable utilisation of domestic breeds, transhumance and biodiversity.
