20-09-2023 - Launch of International Call for Proposals on Southwest Indian Ocean Marine Protected Areas

A call for proposals between France, Kenya, Mozambique, South Africa, Tanzania, Comoros, Mauritius and Madagascar has been launched, focused on ecological connectivity between the Southwest Indian Ocean Marine Protected Areas.

As the Southwest Indian Ocean basin is recognised as a significant location for endemism and biodiversity, it hosts a number of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs), controlled by various governing bodies. These MPAs are essential for maintaining the ecosystems of the areas. The Southwest Indian Ocean Marine Protected Areas (SIOMPAs) are currently spatially fragmented, so an important element to ensure success in conservation is the topic of ecological connectivity. The establishment of a strong regional network of MPAs would help to promote the notion of linking management actions as well as to develop bold initiatives to achieve conservation goals.
