09-11-2023 - BMBF Launches New Initiative on Social Innovation for Sustainable Cities
The funding initiative ‘Transformation Cluster: Social Innovation for Sustainable Cities’ (Transformationscluster Soziale Innovationen für nachhaltige Städte) by Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung (BMBF - Federal Ministry for Education and Research) is designed to contribute to the future-oriented, sustainable development of cities through research, development and knowledge transfer in the field of social innovation. It is intended to contribute to current challenges such as the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, the decrease of resource consumption, land use and ground sealing, as well as the protection of biodiversity. Important other aspects include adaptation to climate change, the improvement of housing quality and liveability and the strengthening of social cohesion as well as social and economic resilience. As such, it contributes to BMBF’s sustainability research strategy (FONA), the German government’s Future Strategy for Research and Innovation as well as the National Strategy for Social Innovation and Social Enterprises. The initiative’s aims also align with the New European Bauhaus Initiative of the European Commission as well as the United Nation's Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
