20-11-2023 - Deep Geothermal Energy - BMBF Launches New Funding Initiative for Collaborative R&D Projects
The funding initiative ‘Deep Geothermal Energy: Foundations for the Energy Transition Underground’ (Tiefengeothermie: Grundlagen für die Energiewende im Untergrund) is part of the research programme ‘Geoscience for Sustainability’ (Geoforschung für Nachhaltigkeit - GEO:N) by Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung (BMBF - Federal Ministry for Education and Research). It is designed to promote basic research that is able to contribute to closing gaps in the basic understanding of processes for deep geothermal energy generation. The aim is to make it easier to predict and minimise the effects of geotechnical interference underground. In this way, the initiative is intended to remove obstacles to the commercial implementation of deep geothermal energy projects by identifying issues and developing solution approaches.
